Go With Your Gut

Did you know your gut actually contains more neurotransmitters than your brain? Your digestive system is at the centre of your wellbeing and is responsible for converting food into simple nutrients and delivering them to the body as well as regulating hormones and excreting toxins. So, keeping a healthy balance of good bugs in your intestine is critical to good gut health. Luckily for you, we have you covered with the healthiest (and tastiest) drinks to boost your gut health.

Kombucha
Probably the trendiest and most popular fermented drink on the market. Kombucha is a fermented tea that originated in China over 2000 years ago. It is loaded with probiotics, rich in antioxidants and can kill harmful bacteria in your digestive system.
Options include Remedy and Kombucha

Water kefir
Water kefir is a probiotic beverage made with water kefir grains. It can ease IBS symptoms such as bloating and digestive distress. Lactobacillus kefiri, which is unique to kefir, has been shown to inhibit the growth of some harmful bacteria such as salmonella, h-pylori and e-coli and is used in some gut inflammatory disorders.
Options include Fermentary and Imbibe

Prebiotics
Prebiotic fiber goes through the small intestine undigested and is fermented when it reaches the large colon. Researchers have found that prebiotics are helpful in increasing the helpful bacteria already in the gut that reduce disease risk and improve general well-being. Think of it as water and fertilizer to help the probiotics to flourish.
Options include Kreol

Apple cider vinegar
People often think of apple cider vinegar as a good weight loss tool however it also has some serious antibacterial properties against some nasty bugs such as E-coli, staphylococcus aureus and candida albicans. It also helps stimulate the production of stomach acid, aiding in the digestion of fats and proteins. Fizzy ‘live ’variants also contain both probiotics and prebiotics that feed the good bacteria and promote the growth of a healthy microflora in the gut. Apple cider vinegar is also actually has an alkalising effect on the body while digesting, meaning it counteracts any of the nasty (delicious) acidic things we eat (multiple times) daily.
Options include Bragg and Pok Pok Som

Ginger and turmeric drinks
These ancient roots have long been known for their numerous health benefits. They are anti-inflammatory, antibiotic, antiviral, promote circulation, boost immunity, treat nausea, aid respiratory function and help manage blood sugars. When fermented they also give your gut plenty of live enzymes to help give your body the all-round love it needs.
Options include Red Dragon Elixirs

Fine Wine for Christmas Time

Christmas is a time to kick back with family and friends and indulge in some good quality food and wine. We have put together a small selection of wines that will make for a special and memorable day.

1. Champagne Larmandier-Bernier “Latitude” Blanc de Blancs - $89.99

There’s only one drink to kick off Christmas day – Champagne! This beautifully dry and
lively Champagne is made with love and care by the very people who farm the grapes. Bring out your poshest flutes and get the day started with a “pop!”

2. 2018 Nick O’Leary White Rocks Riesling - $34.99

We all love Nick O’Leary’s classic Canberra Region Riesling. It’s light, zippy with the right balance of citrus zing and floral aroma. On a special occasion though, we opt for his single vineyard White Rocks which carries a little more drive and minerality to pair perfectly with fresh prawns and oysters.

3. 2018 Sinapius Jean Morice Rose - $28.99

Here, we’re picking a wine that will be able to be paired with almost anything - Smoked salmon, salads and even BBQ meats. It’s a top quality rose made from Tasmanian Pinot Noir and Gamay grapes and is aged in old oak barrels. It has a joyous festive colour in the glass and is just yum!

4. Rockford Sparkling Black Shiraz - $91.99

This wine is often described as ‘Aussie Christmas in a bottle’. It’s a timeless and celebratory red that is rich and complex whilst also having the benefit of being served lightly chilled. Just perfect with turkey, ham or just opening Christmas presents! (Available in very limited quantities)

Our Cheese-monger Curates Your Festive Board

Christmas is a time to relax, indulge and spend quality time with family and friends. What better way to indulge than with a selection of specially curated, festive cheeses from all corners of the globe!

Here is a sneak peak at a few of our new Christmas lines!!
Connage Whisky Dunlop Cheddar Truckle: This organic cheddar is made in Scotland with the addition of Benromach, a single malt whisky. The whisky flavour is subtle, and mixed with the creamy texture, lingers pleasantly on the palate. As it matures the cheddar and whisky will develop a greater depth of flavour.
La Caseria Blugins: This unique Italian blue is a result of the collaboration between the Carpenendo cheese makers (around 45 mins north of Venice) and a local gin producer. It takes 4 months of smearing this mild blue cheese with gin, juniper, cinnamon and liquorice to develop a sweet and creamy texture followed by a delicate and spicy finish.
Milawa King River Gold: Made by hand, the subtle aroma and flavour of King River Gold is entirely unlike strong, washed rind cheeses. It has a soft-smooth centre with a slightly gritty, orange rind and an earthy, almost smoky flavour.
Mothais Sur Feuille: Once ripened, this delicious goat’s cheese rests on a chestnut, sycamore or plane leaf to encourage optimum flavour development. The rind is delicate and slightly wrinkled, often covered with blue and grey moulds. The interior has a meltingly soft texture when young, becoming denser as the cheese matures. When young there are delicate wood, earth and leaf flavours. These flavours become more intense with age. Delicious either way.

Ian's Seasonal Recipe

Never mind Jamie Oliver, this dish really does take less than 15 minutes to make!  It’s also nutritious and delicious.

Ingredients

500g pasta
185g tin of tuna in oil.
1 lemon, zest and juice
1 small bunch parsley, roughly chopped
1-2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
Cracked black pepper

Method

Cook the pasta in a big pot of boiling salted water according to the packet instructions.

Drain pasta, reserving ½ cup of cooking water.

Return pasta to the pot and add the tuna with the oil from the can, zest and juice of the lemon, parsley, olive oil, and enough pasta cooking water to loosen everything up.

Drizzle with a little more olive oil, and grind some black pepper over the top.

You can add chilli flakes, halved cherry tomato, or olives for example.
